BIRDS IN THE BOREAL FOREST

Over the last several decades, scientists have learned that species of songbirds are declining in our boreal forest.

Although the reasons for the decline are not yet fully understood, it is believed that loss of wintering areas in tropical rainforests, combined with the changes caused by clearing, logging and road building in Canada's boreal forests and aspen parklands, are major limiting factors for songbirds.

Saskatchewan's southern and central forests are home to some of the highest populations of songbirds found anywhere north of Mexico. Our forests are well known for their high diversity of warblers which court, nest and raise their young in this fragile ecosystem.

Large protected and interconnected areas are urgently needed if we are to preserve this national treasure for future generations. For more information on the status of songbird populations visit the Boreal Songbird Initiative website.
