The Place
The Churchill River is a magnificent river in the heart of Saskatchewan’s boreal forest. The river’s entire channel follows a 2100 km chain of stream-connected lakes. The lands are rich in forest plants and animals and provide essential ecological functions such as water purification, flood control and climate regulation.

Expanding human uses such as damming, clearcutting and mining are growing pressures in the Churchill River and its watershed. Today, several government-led planning processes are looking at human activities in the Churchill River basin. These processes are meant to produce plans that will allow for both economic use and ecological health of the forest. Unfortunately, the Churchill is being zoned to allow for industrial developments such as logging and clear-cutting. Furthermore, plans are not viewing the river as a whole connected ecosystem. This is leading to disconnected decisions for future land use along the Churchill and in its drainage basin.
How Can We Protect It?
The Churchill River has been described as the backbone of the huge Churchill drainage basin (72,000 square kilometers). An important first step in preserving the Churchill drainage basin as a whole connected ecosystem is to establish legal protection of the river itself. The river would be protected from industrial developments like logging and hydro dams, but it would always be available for the many human uses that take place to today such as tourism, hunting, trapping and fishing.
Today’s decision-makers need to know that Saskatchewan residents value the Churchill and want to see it protected. Land use plans must recognize and ensure meaningful protection all along the river. The people of Saskatchewan must be part of the planning for the future of the Churchill. This is especially true for the communities who call the Churchill River home.
