THE CHURCHILL RIVER
The Cree name for the Churchill River is MISSINIPE, or Great Water. It is a magnificent freshwater artery that follows a 2100 km chain of stream-connected lakes flowing west to east through Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba before emptying into Hudson Bay. In Saskatchewan, the Churchill drainage basin encompasses approximately half of the province's northern boreal forest.
Words fail to adequately describe the extraordinary beauty and intrinsic values of this river and its adjacent rugged uplands. The land is rich in forest plants and animals, and offers a host of ecological services such as soil development, water purification, flood control, and climate regulation.
There are threats to this great river and its basin - threats from human developments such as mining, industrial logging, hydroelectric projects and water diversion projects. Today, three ongoing land use plans are being developed for sections of the Churchill River basin. Unfortunately, the plans are disconnected from one another and as such, are failing to address the ecological needs of the Churchill River basin as an intact, interconnected ecosystem.
CPAWS Saskatchewan is working to ensure careful planning and habitat protection in the Churchill River Basin. Current work includes activities in the the North Central land use planning region and a campaign to protect the Churchill River corridor. See links below for more information on the river.
