THE USKIY PUHCO REPORT
Towards Ecosystem-based Conservation Planning in the North Central Land Use Plan Area
Uskiy Puhco (pronounced U-SKEE-PU-GO) means 'Land Only' in the Cree language.
What is It?
The Uskiy Puhco report is a research study of, and a conservation-based land use plan for, the North Central Planning area in northern Saskatchewan. The study area covers about 3 ½ million hectares of boreal forest, stretching roughly from La Ronge to Key Lake. The Churchill River flows through.
What is it About?
The report discusses many different aspects of the planning area, including plants, animals, people, and water. It discusses how the forest works and what it is sensitive to. It considers the economic needs of the people and the industries that are present and expected. And finally, in the wake of road networks and industrial developments that are poised to invade many part of the planning area, the Uskiy Puhco report proposes a land use zoning structure designed to help take care of the land and its people, while still allowing for economic development.
Who Produced the Report? The Uskiy Puhco report was produced by a group of people from five Woodland Cree and Métis communities, three Saskatchewan conservation and recreation groups, and the Silva Forest Foundation. All desired to see a plan that focuses on keeping the land healthy so that both culture and local employment opportunities will be long-lasting. The results of several years work are contained in this report entitled Towards Ecosystem Based Conservation Planning in the North Central Plan Area (for the sake of brevity, it is usually called the Uskiy Puhco report).
What Do Experts Say About It?
Uskiy Puhco members also sought independent advice from people who have familiarity and expertise on what is needed to take care of northern forests and how to use the land carefully for human needs. Four boreal forest ecologists and planners from across Canada were asked to review the Uskiy Puhco report and comment on its efficacy. The scientists endorsed the Uskiy Puhco report as a scientifically credible approach to land use and conservation in the region.
