MYTHS ABOUT PROTECTED AREAS

There is a myth. It says that when conservation groups advocate for protected areas, it means 'keep people out'. The truth is, people are part of nature and have a place in protected areas. 'Protection' means keeping human activities and developments out if they threaten the ecological integrity (health) of the area.

There is another myth. It says that protecting wilderness will take away livelihoods and quality of life. The truth is, wilderness provides for everyone. It keeps our planet healthy, it keeps our economies healthy, it keeps our populations of plants and animals healthy, it offers beauty, recreation and adventure, it is part of our heritage, it shapes our culture.

There is a third myth. It says that we have so much wilderness in our country, it will always be there. The truth is, our wilderness is disappearing fast .
