SASKATCHEWAN'S PROTECTED AREAS
Types of Protected Areas
Saskatchewan's typically identifies and designates new "provincial" protected areas through a provincial government program called the Representative Areas Network (RAN). Numerous Provincial and Federal designation categories are identified in the RAN program such as provincial parks, regional parks, national parks, community pastures and so on. When new sites are selected either by the Provincial or Federal governments, protection is achieved through designation under various legal statutes such as the Parks Act, the Ecological Reserves Act, the Parkland Reserves Act, and so on. Saskatchewan's provincial statutes can be found on the Queens Printer website called FREELAW.
The list below summarizes protected area designations in Saskatchewan.
Details on each of these designations can be found in Representative Area Designations Categories in Saskatchewan. The goals, objectives, selection criteria and management considerations for each type of protected area are listed:

Existing Protected Areas
The map above shows existing protected areas in Saskatchewan's boreal region that are probably large enough (greater than 10,000 ha) to help preserve biological diversity. Although not included on this map, smaller protected areas do have value and are an important component to maintaining healthy lands. However, science teaches us that ecosystem health can only be preserved over the long term if the key protected areas are large and linked in some way. None of the protected areas, large or small, are linked in Saskatchewan. NOTE: Mapping information for existing protected areas in the prairie region is not available at this time.
