VALUING WILDERNESS

In wilderness is the preservation of the world.
words by Henry David Thoreau

Wilderness is important because it protects the variety of life on earth. The variety of life is important because it is the foundation for all life.

  - Branimir Gjetvaj

The patterns in wilderness in Saskatchewan, such as sand dunes, wetlands, tundra, forests, lakes, rivers, grasslands, coulees and so on, provide natural spaces for plant and animal life. These ecosystems help regulate climate, produce oxygen, remove carbon dioxide, cycle nutrients (food), generate soil and purify water. All life depends on these systems for survival. No human-made technology can carry out these functions as efficiently as the natural world.

Wilderness is important to people in many other ways. The natural diversity of our landscapes is reflected in our languages and cultures. Ecosystems provide water, plants, animals and minerals for our use, influencing the history of people.

Wilderness offers a place for many to take refuge where they find beauty, inspiration and spiritual renewal. Wilderness bestows on us a place to spend time with friends and family, enjoying the experience and wonders of nature.

When we protect the variety of life, we are:

  • allowing for the continuation of ecological and evolutionary processes
  • benefiting plants and animals
  • benefiting ourselves and future generations
  • sustaining our communities, culture and our way of life
  • doing our share to protect the planet's natural riches.
